You may have noticed that our recipes use a lot of food colouring. An excessive amount, some would say. But to them we say, it’s not our fault! Pokémon are meant to be colourful!
Anyway, considering how much we use, I (Siobhán) thought it might be helpful to give you the lowdown on the different types available.
Relax, you haven’t unknowingly travelled in time and missed Pokémons #10-#91; we’ve taken a bit of a jump from our usual numerical order to bring you a very special Halloween recipe for everyone’s favourite Ghost Pokémon, Gastly, Haunter & Gengar! Ghosts are dark and ethereal, so we felt an airy, chocolatey mousse would best capture their otherworldly aura. At the very least, if you make the recipe to our proportions you will be haunted by the chickens that may have been from all the eggs you’ll go through! Also, yes, technically chocolate mousse does not require one to bake per se, but it’s a yummy dessert so it counts. We decided to try three different flavours of mousse for the three ghosts; Mars Bar for Gastly, chocolate orange for Haunter and dark chocolate for Gengar (’cause he’s the darkest, duh). We then decorated them by making their faces in solid chocolate because it looks damn awesome. This was both our first experience making mousse, and we were met with varying levels of success. Chocolate and eggs; how hard can it be right? Well, we make mistakes so you don’t have to 😛 Let’s get started!
Separating eggs can be challenging. Occasionally yolks will break and mess up your mix. To avoid yolks or whites straying into the wrong places, use this method of egg division:
Hello valued followers and welcome intrepid newbies! In this post we bring you the final addition to the starter families; Squirtle, Wartortle & Blastoise. It will be our last cupcake recipe for a while as we intend to branch out into bolder, exciting & new Bakémon territory- but never fear these cupcakes are totally delicious and totally fun! It’s also our first recipe involving chocolate, so it’s basically guaranteed to be awesome 😉 So what are we making? We felt blue turtles were best captured as blueberry & chocolate chip cupcakes with different chocolate shells on top. Squirtle begins as blueberry & white chocolate chips with a white chocolate shell, becoming Wartortle with the addition of milk chocolate chips & a milk chocolate shell, finally evolving to Blastoise by adding dark chocolate chips & a dark chocolate shell (& sweetie cannons!). There’s nearly a kilo of chocolate in this recipe it’s that chocolicious, and if you follow our instructions you’ll end up with some pretty amazing looking turtles! So what are you waiting for, let’s begin!
This is our first Trainer Tips post, designed to help novices to the baking world achieve their tasty Pokémon baking dreams. You may want advice on how best to do things described in our recipes, or the pros and cons of certain types of ingredients or equipment you may need. We want to make Bakémon accessible to all Pokémon & tasty treat lovers, regardless of their culinary skill so every now and then we’ll give you some handy tips (but we promise not to try to teach you how to catch Pokémon). First up we shall dispense some necessary wisdom on how to melt chocolate, something we imagine you will have to do frequently over the course of our Bakémon adventures.
Welcome back baking trainers and Pokémon bakers! We hope you enjoyed our first recipe, and have recovered from the experience of lime, mint & rum cupcakes. This time we’ll be bringing you a slightly more normal, but just as fun, recipe to make everyone’s favourite fire starter family (Charmander also happens to be both Nicole & Siobhán’s favourite starter, so they’re extra tasty cakes 😉 ) Charmander will be presented with a little spice as cinnamon & honey mini cupcakes, getting hotter with the addition of cloves, nutmeg and ginger for Charmeleon fairy cakes and with a final fire blast shot of whiskey for large Charizard cupcakes. These cupcakes are seriously yummy and seriously pretty when iced (see our instructions below), we whole heartedly recommend everyone try them! We used honey in the buttercream icing to great success- seriously, honey icing is totally delicious and we’re both shocked that we’d never heard of it before. You need to taste it, and so, here’s the recipe:
Welcome to our very first Pokémon baking experiment. With this recipe we’ve tried to take inspiration from the very first 3 Pokémon and much loved starter family; Bulbasaur, Ivysaur & Venusaur. Starting with mini lime cupcakes representing Bulbasaur, we evolve to lime & mint cupcakes for Ivysaur and again to large lime, mint & rum cupcakes for Venusaur. Yes, this is an odd combination of flavours for cupcakes but we feel they capture the spirit of the Bulbafamily and if you get the proportions right they’re very tasty (read: we may have added too much rum in our batch, we have adjusted the recipe accordingly below 😉 )
We’re Siobhán and Nicole, two students with a shared cause: to bake all original 151 Pokémon. We aim to bring you weekly recipes inspired by each Pokémon (or Pokémon evolutionary chain), starting at #1 and working our way to #151! Most of these recipes are our own creations, we’ll give you step by step instructions & photos so you too can be Bakémon masters like us 😉
We’ll see you soon for our first Bakémon experiment!
Gotta bake ’em all!
