Gender Equality Cupcakes

Gender Stereotype Defying Cupcakes

Ahem. Well that title was a mouthful. Yep, this week we attempted to bake six Pokémon all at once. As you can imagine, it took a while (but not as long as you’d think!) and writing it up also took a while, which is why this post is late (sorry!). We felt it was logical to do both male and female Nidoran lines all in one recipe because essentially they’re the all the same family, they just differ by gender. Did anyone else find it weird that in the first Pokémon game only Nidoran had a gender? And subsequently when genders and breeding were introduced for all Pokémon, that Nidoking and Nidoqueen can’t breed? Japan, you are cray-cray…Anyways, the recipe is for fruit & chocolate cupcakes, specifically blackberry & milk chocolate for the female line and raspberry & white chocolate for the male line (specifics for each mon detailed below). Yup, pink for boys and blue for girls, because gender norms are silly, right? Now, let’s make lots and lots of cupcakes!

Yield:

  • 12 mini cupcakes – 6 Nidoran♀, 6 Nidoran♂The Nidoran Superfamily
  • 12 fairy cakes – 6 Nidorina, 6 Nidorino
  • 12 cupcakes – 6 Nidoqueen, 6 Nidoking

Equipment:

  • bowls, whisks, spatula, spoons, sieve, etc.
  • cupcake trays of various sizes
  • 1 or 2 saucepans
  • pink/red/purple and blue cupcake cases of various sizes
  • icing apparatus

Ingredients:

For the Cakes:

  • 300 g (10 oz) butter
  • 300 g (10 oz) + 2 tbsp caster sugar
  • 300 g (10 oz) self-raising flour
  • 5 eggs
  • 500 g (18 oz) halved blackberries (fresh if possible, though we had to use frozen)
  • 500 g (18 oz) raspberries (same for these)
  • 50 g (2 oz) milk chocolate chips
  • 50 g (2 oz) white chocolate chips

For the Icing:

  • 150 g (6 oz) butter

  4. Strain the fruity gloop through a sieve to remove the seeds.
  5. Set aside to cool.

For the Mini Cupcakes/Fairy Cakes/Cupcakes:

(Recipe here given per eggworth as the recipe is largely the same for each Pokémon. The two Nidoran require 1 eggworth of batter between them, Nidorina and Nidorino split 2 eggworths between them, ditto Nidoqueen and Nidoking (though our cupcakes were a little flat, so you could extend this to 3 eggworths if you wanted))

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 F).Fruity batter!
  2. Cream together 60 g (2 oz) of butter with the same weight of sugar per eggworth of recipe.
  3. Whisk in 1 egg.
  4. Sieve in 60 g (2 oz) of flour and fold it gently into the mix.

To Customize for Each Pokémon:

For the Nidorans:

  1. Split the batter into 2 bowls.
  2. To one bowl add half the blackberry coulis, to the other, add half the raspberry coulis, and mix through.
  3. Fill 6 blue mini cupcake cases with the blackberry batter and 6 pink/red/purple mini cupcake cases with the raspberry batter.
  4. Bake for about 7 minutes, or until they spring back when lightly poked.

For Nidorina and Nidorino:Raw cupcakes

  1. Split the batter into 2 bowls.
  2. To one bowl add 125 g (4 oz) of halved blackberries, to the other, add the same weight of raspberries, and gently stir them through.
  3. Fill 6 blue fairy cake cases with the blackberry batter and 6 pink/red/purple fairy cake cases with the raspberry batter.
  4. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until they spring back when gently poked.

For Nidoqueen and Nidoking:

  2. To one bowl, add the remaining halved blackberries, and the milk chocolate chips. To the other bowl, add the remaining raspberries and the white chocolate chips. Stir each through gently.
  3. Fill 6 blue cupcake cases with the blackberry batter and 6 pink/red/purple cupcake cases with the raspberry batter.
  4. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until they spring back when gently prodded.

To Decorate:

  1. Whisk the butter until it’s soft and creamy.
  2. Sieve in the icing sugar and beat well.
  3. Split the icing sugar into 2 bowls.
  4. To one bowl add the remaining raspberry coulis and enough pink/red food dye to make a light pink colour.
  5. To the other bowl add the blackberry coulis and enough navy/blue food dye two make a light blue colour.
  6. Spread a layer of pink icing onto each mini cupcake/fairy cake/cupcake that contains raspberries using a knife.
  7. Spread a layer of blue icing onto each mini cupcake/fairy cake/cupcake that contains blackberries using a knife.
  8. Fill your icing apparatus with one colour of icing and give spikes to the fairy cakes and cupcakes of that colour, then switch colours and repeat.
  9. Add extra food dye to darken the remaining icing of each colour, then use your icing apparatus to make dots of each darkened colour on the appropriates cakes of all sizes.
