Gender Equality Cupcakes

Gender Stereotype Defying Cupcakes

Ahem. Well that title was a mouthful. Yep, this week we attempted to bake six Pokémon all at once. As you can imagine, it took a while (but not as long as you’d think!) and writing it up also took a while, which is why this post is late (sorry!). We felt it was logical to do both male and female Nidoran lines all in one recipe because essentially they’re the all the same family, they just differ by gender. Did anyone else find it weird that in the first Pokémon game only Nidoran had a gender? And subsequently when genders and breeding were introduced for all Pokémon, that Nidoking and Nidoqueen can’t breed? Japan, you are cray-cray…Anyways, the recipe is for fruit & chocolate cupcakes, specifically blackberry & milk chocolate for the female line and raspberry & white chocolate for the male line (specifics for each mon detailed below). Yup, pink for boys and blue for girls, because gender norms are silly, right? Now, let’s make lots and lots of cupcakes!

Bzz, hope you like honey!

Welcome reader to another Pokémon recipe brought to you by the Bakémon masters. This week we tackle Weedle,Kakuna & Beedrill- the other main bug family from first gen. Those of you who read last week’s Caterpie, Metapod & Butterfree recipe will notice this week’s is quite similar; we decided it was easiest and made the most sense to continue with cake truffles and cupcakes because the two families are so similar. We hope you like honey because the key difference with this recipe to last week’s is that it is completely stuffed with honey. Honey in the cake, honey in the icing (mmmm honey icing), honeycomb brittle…honey honey honey everywhere! Y’know, coz like Beedrill…bees make honey..do you get it? No? Well honey is tasty anyway…As well as having lots of tasty honey we also used chocolate  to coat our Weedles which was much more successful than Caterpie’s candy melts, and we coated our Kakunas in honeycomb as opposed to meringue…which was a little bit mad, but the good kind of mad we hope! Anyways, less words more baking (lol jk here come more words…the recipe!).

Cute enough to eat!

Greetings Bakémon lovelies! We resume our numerical journey through the Pokémon where we left off before our Halloween jump to the ghosts; Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree. These are one of the classic two bug families (the other being Weedle, Kakuna & Beedrill which you’ll make next week) that all Pokémon trainers are familiar with as they inhabit nearly every patch of grass in Kanto and form part of many trainer’s early game teams. This is quite a long recipe that we recommend you undertake over a period of two days, unless being trapped in your kitchen for hours and hours is something you enjoy. Caterpie will be made as cake truffles covered in candy melts, evolving into Metapod cake truffles with a hardened (geddit?) meringue shell and finally metamorphosising into colourful butterfly cake Butterfrees (which, incidently, are most definitely not butter-free). These make totally cute and colourful bugs that even Misty would have to love, but be warned they’re very rich & probably not very good for you (although a lot easier to eat than real insects!) Technically our Butterfree are butterfly cakes and not cupcakes so our promise to ease off cupcakes for a while still stands. Also, if you’re wondering what a cake truffle even is, it’s basically a ball of cake crumbs and icing smooshed together. Delicious. Here comes the recipe!

Squirtle! Wartortle! Blaistoise! Go!

Hello valued followers and welcome intrepid newbies! In this post we bring you the final addition to the starter families; Squirtle, Wartortle & Blastoise. It will be our last cupcake recipe for a while as we intend to branch out into bolder, exciting & new Bakémon territory- but never fear these cupcakes are totally delicious and totally fun! It’s also our first recipe involving chocolate, so it’s basically guaranteed to be awesome 😉 So what are we making? We felt blue turtles were best captured as blueberry & chocolate chip cupcakes with different chocolate shells on top. Squirtle begins as blueberry & white chocolate chips with a white chocolate shell, becoming Wartortle with the addition of milk chocolate chips & a milk chocolate shell, finally evolving to Blastoise by adding dark chocolate chips & a dark chocolate shell (& sweetie cannons!). There’s nearly a kilo of chocolate in this recipe it’s that chocolicious, and if you follow our instructions you’ll end up with some pretty amazing looking turtles! So what are you waiting for, let’s begin!

The Charmander family burning bright

Welcome back baking trainers and Pokémon bakers! We hope you enjoyed our first recipe, and have recovered from the experience of lime, mint & rum cupcakes. This time we’ll be bringing you a slightly more normal, but just as fun, recipe to make everyone’s favourite fire starter family (Charmander also happens to be both Nicole & Siobhán’s favourite starter, so they’re extra tasty cakes 😉 ) Charmander will be presented with a little spice as cinnamon & honey mini cupcakes, getting hotter with the addition of cloves, nutmeg and ginger for Charmeleon fairy cakes and with a final fire blast shot of whiskey for large Charizard cupcakes. These cupcakes are seriously yummy and seriously pretty when iced (see our instructions below), we whole heartedly recommend everyone try them! We used honey in the buttercream icing to great success- seriously, honey icing is totally delicious and we’re both shocked that we’d never heard of it before. You need to taste it, and so, here’s the recipe:

Bulbasaur, Ivysaur & Venusaur- cupcake form.

Welcome to our very first Pokémon baking experiment. With this recipe we’ve tried to take inspiration from the very first 3 Pokémon and much loved starter family; Bulbasaur, Ivysaur & Venusaur. Starting with mini lime cupcakes representing Bulbasaur, we evolve to lime & mint cupcakes for Ivysaur and again to large lime, mint & rum cupcakes for Venusaur. Yes, this is an odd combination of flavours for  cupcakes but we feel they capture the spirit of the Bulbafamily and if you get the proportions right they’re very tasty (read: we may have added too much rum in our batch, we have adjusted the recipe accordingly below 😉 )
